What is an element?
A substance that cannot be broken down into other substances.
What is the table that lists all the elements called?
The Periodic Table.
What is a chemical symbol?
A one- or two-letter code for an element
What is an atom?
A tiny particle that makes up elements.
Are atoms of different elements the same or different?
Different.
What is a compound?
A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements strongly joined together.
Are the properties of a compound the same as or different from the elements it’s made of?
Different.
What is a molecule?
A group of two or more atoms strongly joined together.
Can a molecule be an element or a compound?
Both. If the atoms are all the same element
What does a chemical formula show?
The relative number of atoms of each element in a substance.
In the formula CO₂
what is the ratio of carbon atoms to oxygen atoms?
How many types of atoms are in a pure element?
One type of atom.
How many types of atoms are in a compound made of two elements?
Two types of atoms.
