P1.1 Forces Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is a force?
A push or a pull.
What is the unit of force?
Newton (N).
What equipment is used to measure force?
A newtonmeter (or spring balance).
What are contact forces?
Forces that happen when objects are touching.
Give two examples of contact forces.
Friction
What is friction?
A force that opposes motion when surfaces rub together.
What is air resistance?
A force that opposes motion through the air.
What are non-contact forces?
Forces that happen when objects do not need to touch.
Give two examples of non-contact forces.
Gravitational force
What is gravitational force?
The force of attraction between any two objects with mass.
What is weight?
The force of the Earth’s gravity on an object due to its mass.
How is mass different from weight?
Mass is the amount of matter in an object (stays the same); weight is the force of gravity on an object (can change depending on gravity).
What are balanced forces?
Forces on an object that are equal in size and opposite in direction.
What happens to an object’s motion if the forces on it are balanced?
If stationary
What are unbalanced forces?
Forces on an object that are not equal in size or opposite in direction.
What happens to an object’s motion if the forces on it are unbalanced?
Its motion changes (starts
What does Hooke’s Law state?
If you double the force on an elastic object
