C14 Alkenes Flashcards
(13 cards)
What is an alkene
An unsaturated hydrocarbon with at least one double bond (C=C)
Why are alkenes reactive?
The pi bond (C=C) is a region of high electron density, making it susceptible to electrophiles
What type of reactions do alkenes undergo
Electrophilic addition
What reagents react with alkenes?
HSO4, Br-Br, H-Br
Test for alkenes
Bromine water turns orange to colourless in the presence of an alkkene
What determines the major and minor products
The stability of the carbo cation
General mechanism for Electrophilic addition
slightly positive atom attacks the pi bond
Carbocation formed
Negative atom (Br-) attacks carbocation
What are polymers made from
Alkenes
What is the repeating unit
The smallest structural unit that repeats to form a polymer
Why are polymers unreactive
No functional groups and strong bonds
What is the role of plasticiser
Weakens IMF, making pvc softer
Uses of PVC
Pipes, window frames
What forces exist between pollyakenes
