c2 Flashcards

1
Q

how are alloys harder then pure metals?

A

in metals, atoms are arranged in layers in which atoms slide over eachother easily
in alloys, a different sized atom distorts layers and makes it harder for atoms to slide over eachother

Q

what is graphite?

A

sheets of carbon atoms arranged in hexagons
each carbon atom holds 3 bonds, conducts electricity
no covalent bonds between layers-> soft and slippery
