C3.3 Covalent Bonding! Flashcards
(7 cards)
What is covalent bonding?
The sharing of electrons between two non-metal atoms.
How are electrons shared in covalent bonds?
Electrons are shared so each atom can have a full outer shell.
Between what types of atoms does covalent bonding usually happen?
Between non-metal atoms.
What is a molecule?
A group of atoms held together by covalent bonds.
Why do covalent compounds have low melting and boiling points?
Because the forces between molecules (intermolecular forces) are weak.
Do covalent compounds conduct electricity? Why or why not?
No, because they don’t have free ions or electrons to carry charge.
Covalent bonds don’t form a lattice because…
in most covalent compounds, atoms group together in small, discrete molecules rather than a repeating 3D pattern.
