Periodic Table – Flashcards
(9 cards)
What is the periodic table?
A chart that organizes all known elements by atomic number and properties.
How are elements arranged in the periodic table?
By increasing atomic number (number of protons).
What is a group in the periodic table?
A vertical column. Elements in the same group have similar chemical properties and the same number of outer electrons.
What is a period in the periodic table?
A horizontal row. Elements in the same period have the same number of electron shells.
What are Group 1 elements called?
Alkali metals.
What happens to Group 1 elements as you go down the group?
They become more reactive, have lower melting points, and form +1 ions.
What are Group 7 elements called?
The halogens.
What happens to Group 7 elements as you go down the group?
They become less reactive and have higher melting/boiling points.
Why are noble gases unreactive?
Because they have a full outer shell of electrons.
