C4. Electrochemistry Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is electrolysis?
Electrolysis is the breakdown of an ionic compound, molten or aqueous solution
What does inert mean?
Chemically unreactive
What is in an electrolyte cell?
A battery
Two electrodes
- cathode
- anode
An electrolyte
Is the cathode negative or positive?
Negative
Is the anode negative or positive?
Positive
What are the main stages of of electrolysis?
1) the electrolyte is made molten or dissolved in water
2) an electric current is passed through the cell
3) cations (metal ions or hydrogen) move twoards the cathode
4) Anions (non-metal ions) move towards the anode
5) metals or hydrogen are formed at the cathode
6) non-metals (except for hydrogen) are formef at the anode
What happens during the electrolysis of molten lead bromide?
Lead is produced at the cathode (a silvery solid), bromine at the anode (brown gas at the anode).
What happens during the electrolysis of dilute sulfuric acid?
Hydrogen is produced at the cathode (colorless gas), oxygen is produced at the anode (colorless gas).
What happens during the electrolysis of concentrated sodium chloride?
Hydorgen is produced at the cathode (colorless gas), chlorine is produced at the anode (pale yellow-green gas).
What the difference in electrolysis between an aqueous solution or a molten liquid?
