C5. Chemical energetics Flashcards
(14 cards)
What is an endothermic reaction?
takes energy from its surrondings, creating a temperature drop
What is an exothermic reaction?
Releases energy into its surrondings, creating a temperature increase
What are some examples of exothermic reactions?
1) Freezing of water
2) Combustion
3) Neutralisation reactions
4) Metal displacement reactions
5) Respiration
What are some examples of endothermic reactions?
1) Electrolysis
2) Melting of ice
3) Photosynthesis
4) Cracking
In an energy diagram of an exothermic reaction are the reactants higher or lower than the products?
higher
In an energy diagram of an endothermic reaction are the reactants higher or lower than the products?
lower
What is activation energy?
Activation energy is the minimum amount of energy that particles need to have when they collide in order to react.
What happens if there is less energy than the activation energy?
If particles are coliding whith less energy than their activation energy, they will simply bounce off each other without reacting.
Does high activation energy mean a faster or slower reaction?
slow
Does low activation energy mean a faster or slower reaction?
fast
Does breaking bonds require energy?
yes
Does making bonds release or require energy?
require
Is breaking bonds an endothermic or exothermic process?
endothermic
Is making bonds an endothermic or exothermic reaction?
exothermic
