(12 cards)
1
Q
What is an alkali
A
A base soluble in water
2
Q
What is a base
A
Substance that nuetralises acid
3
Q
Base + Acid =
A
Water + salt
(BAWS)
4
Q
What is a salt
A
A salt is a compound formed when hydrogen is partially or fully displaced by a metal
5
Q
Hydrochloric acid
A
- HCl
- chloride
- Cl-
6
Q
Sulphuric Acid
A
- H2SO4
- Sulphate
- SO4 2-
7
Q
Nitric Acid
A
- HNO3
- Nitrate
- NO3 -
8
Q
Method for making salt
A
- React an acid with an excess of metal, metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate until no more reacts
- Filter the mixture to get a solution of the salt with solid precipitate left behind
- Heat the solution to start evaporating the water
- Turn of heat wait until all water evaporates leaving the solid salt behind
9
Q
Acid + Alkali =
A
Salt + water
(AAWS)
10
Q
Method for making salt with alkali
A
- React an acid with an excess of alkali
- Use base or acid indicator to find out when reaction complete
- Heat the solution to start evaporating the water
- Turn of heat wait until all water evaporates leaving the solid salt behind
11
Q
Acid + Carbonate=
A
Water + carbon dioxide + salt
12
Q
Method with carbonate
A
React an acid with an excess of metal, metal oxide, hydroxide or carbonate until no more reacts (no more bubbles left)
- Heat the solution to start evaporating the water
- Turn of heat wait until all water evaporates leaving the solid salt behind
