10
Q

What is fractional distillation

A

Crude oil seperated into useful fractions depending on the boiling point of the numerous substances it contains it goes from high temperatures and lowers as you go up

11
Q

How does fractional distillation work

A

Crude oil is heated in a furnace and passed into the bottom of the fractionating column. The vapour mixture given off rises up the column and the different fractions condense out at different parts of the column

Q

What happens when there is a positive test for carbon dioxide in combustion

A

Bubble it through limewater. Limewater turns cloudy

17
Q

What is cracking reaction an example of

A

Thermal decomposition

18
Q

Formula for alkenes

A

CnHn2

19
Q

What does cracking do

A

Allows large hydrocarbon molecules to be broken down into smaller, more useful hydrocarbon molecules.

20
Q

What is cracking an example of

A

Thermal decomposition reaction

21
Q

What is a positive test result in the cracking experiment for alkenes

A

It turns the orange bromine water colourless
