Cable Properties (FINAL) Flashcards
(6 cards)
What are the 2 main cable properties?
Membrane resistance (Rm)
Internal (axial) resistance (Ri)
How does high membrane resistance lead to faster conduction velocity?
High resistance = less current leakage = signal stays stronger & spreads farther
How does low internal resistance lead to faster conduction velocity?
Low internal resistance = current moves inside easily = signal spreads faster
Give the formula for time constant 𝜏, and explain variables.
𝜏 = RC
R = resistance
C = capacitance
What does the time constant 𝜏 tell us?
The time in seconds for voltage across capacitor to reach 63.2%
Give the formula for the length constant λ, and explain the variables.
λ = ((rm)/(ri + ro))1/2
rm = membrane resistance
ri = internal resistance
ro = total resistance in external loop of nerve fiber (negligible, so zero)
