Cabling and Topology Flashcards
(44 cards)
Bus Topology
Network that uses single cable to connect all computers in a line
Ring Topology
Network that uses single cable to connect all computers on a network in a ring of cable
Data Flow of Bus Topology
Data from each computer went out on the whole bus and needed terminations at each end to prevent reflection of signal causing network loss
Data Flow of Ring Topology
Data moved in a circle from one computer to the next in the same direction and required no termination.
Flaws of Ring and Bus Topology
If the cable broke at any point the whole network would go down.
Star Topology
Uses central connection box for all the computers on the network which offers Fault tolerance.
Hybrid Topology
A bus or ring network that has been shrunken down into a box that uses physical topology and logical topology.
Physical Topology
How the cables physically look
Logical Topology
How the Signals Travel electronically
Mesh Topology
Every computer can connect to every other computer via two or more route.
Partially Meshed Topology
At least two machines have redundant connections. Every machine doesn’t have to connect to every other machine.
Fully Meshed Topology
Every computer connects directly to every other computer.
2 Types of Copper cabling
Coaxial and Twisted Pair
2 Coaxial Cable Common Connectors
BNC Connector and F Connector
BNC connector
Early copper cable twist and Stick connector
F Connector
Copper Cable Screw in Connector
2 Coaxial Cable T ypes
RG-59 and RG-6
RG-59 Coaxial Cable
Used primarily for cable tv, rated at 75 OhMs and had F type connector
RG-6 Coaxial Cable
Much thinner style coax that is mainly used today, rated at 75 Ohms and uses F type connector
RG
Radio Guide Rating that measure OhM
RG-58
Used primarily for Television rated at 50 OhMs and had BNC Connector
Twisted Pair Cable
Consists of twisted pairs of cables bundled together into a common jacket.
2 Types of twisted pair cables
Shielded and Unshielded
STP
Shielded twisted pair cable consists of twisted wires surrounded by shielding to protect from EMI.
