Flashcards in CAD/ CAM Deck (24):
1

Define CAD

Computer Aided Design

2

Define CAM

Computer Aided Manufacturing

3

Define FMS

Flexible Manufacturing System. This is where production is organised into cells of machines performing different tasks.

4

Define CNC

Computer Numerical Control. Computer numerical control is the automation of machine tools by means of computers executing pre-programmed sequences of machine control commands

5

Define JIT

Just In Time Manufacturing. This is a strategy used by companies which involves receiving goods only as they are needed in the production process. This way, no materials need to be kept in storage.

6

Give 8 advantages of CAD

Availability at a student level

Can be easy to pick up initially

Visualise concepts in detail (lighting, rendering, materials)

Accuracy

Orthographic drawings

Simulations

Easy to edit

Speed

7

Give 6 disadvantages of CAD

Cost

Difficulty at complex levels

Training

Ergonomics

Crashes computers

Computer errors

8

Which file type do you use for 2D CAD

DXF

9

Which file type do you use for 3D CAD

STL

10

What is the datum

Where x,y and z co-ordinates meet (0,0,0)

11

How does CAD help companies reduce shipping costs?

Designs can be sent electronically to be manufactured near where they will be sold.

12

What is the input in a manufacturing system?

All the materials, CAD, tools and equipment you start with.

13

What is the process in a manufacturing system?

Whatever happens to the input to turn it into the output. The forming, addition or removal of material.

14

What is the output in a manufacturing system?

The final product

15

What are addition machines?

Machines which add material

16

What are subtraction machines?

Machines which remove material.

17

Name three 2-Axis machines

Laser cutter, plasma cutter and the water cutter.

18

Name three 3-Axis machines

3D printer, CNC Router and the CNC Lathe

19

What materials work with a laser cutter?

Plastics, woods, cardboards and fabrics

20

What materials work with plasma cutters?

Metals

21

What materials work with water cutters?

Steel, concrete and glass

22

What materials work with 3D printers?

ABS and PLA

23

What materials work with CNC Routers?

Chemiwood

24

What materials work with CNC Lathes?

Woods, metals and plastics
