Capacitance Flashcards

1
Q

What does a capacitor consist of

A

Two conductors insulated from each other. when a batter is connected one of the conductors gains electrons from the battery and the other loses electrons to the battery. Each plate gains an equal and opposite charge

Q

How do thunder clouds link to capacitance

A

Imagine the ground and a thundercloud as a pair of charged plates.
As the cloud is charged a strong electric field exists
This means there is a potential difference between the two
V=Ed

Q

Why does the discharge current decrease gradually to 0

A

The pd across the capacitor decreases as it loses charge

Q

What are dielectrics

A

Electrically insulating materials that increase the ability of a parallel plate capacitor to store charge

Q

How do dielectrics work

A

When places between the plates its molecules become polarised meaning the surface facing the negative plate gains positive charge

9
Q

How is more charge conserved in a dielectric system

A

Positive side attracts more electrons to the negative plate from the battery
Negative side pushes electrons back to the battery from the positive side
