Carbohydrates Flashcards
(40 cards)
What are organic molecules?
Molecules that contain a carbon atom
What is a polymer?
A large molecule consisting on smaller subunits called monomers
Why are carbohydrates important in the body?
Used for storing energy
In plants, fungi and bacteria they form part of the cell wall
What is a monosaccharide?
A simple sugar where there is 1 O atom and 2 H atoms for every C
What is the general formula for a monosaccharide?
(CH20)n
Why are trisose sugars important?
Found in mitochondria
Glucose is broken down into triose sugars during respiration
Give examples of pentose sugars.
Ribose and deoxyribose
What are the properties of hexose sugars?
Often sweet tasting
Give examples of hexose sugars.
Glucose
Fructose
Galactose
What are the isomers of glucose?
Alpha
Beta
What are disaccharide?
Made up of 2 monosaccharides joined together
How are disaccharides formed?
2 monosaccharides are joined in a condensation reaction
Give examples of disaccharides.
Sucrose
Lactose
Maltose
What is the bond called in that holds a disaccharide together?
Glycosidic bond
Which 2 monosaccharides join to form sucrose?
a glucose
Fructose
Which 2 monosaccharides join to make lactose?
a glucose
Galactose
Which 2 monosaccharides join to make maltose?
a glucose
a glucose
Where is sucrose found?
Stored in plants
Eg sugar cane
Where is lactose found?
It’s the main carbohydrate found in milk
Where is maltose found?
Found in germinating seeds
Eg barley
What is the test for reducing sugars?!
Benedicts : goes from blue solution to red precipitate
What are sugars which do not react with benedicts solution called?
Non reducing sugars
What is starch?
A long chain polymer formed of a glucose monomers
What is a polysaccharide?
Made of many monosaccharides units joined by condensation reactions
