What is cardiac rehabilitation?
The sum of activities required to influence favorably the underlying cause of the disease.
How many stages of cardiac rehabilitation are there?
4 phases.
What is phase 1 of cardiac rehabilitation?
Inpatient Period
What is phase 2 of cardiac rehabilitation?
Early Post-Discharge Period
What is phase 3 of cardiac rehabilitation?
Supervised outpatient program, including structured exercise.
What is phase 4 of cardiac rehabilitation?
Long-term follow-up/maintenance of primary care.
What are 5 patient groups of cardiac rehab?
Post-Revascularization, Stable Angina, Chronic Heart Failure, Other Groups, Special Needs Groups.
For Phase 1: Inpatient Period of cardiac rehab, what aspect of planning begins on Day 1?
Discharge Planning begins on Day 1
What are Sternal Precautions after Cardiac Surgery?
No Push/Pull
No lifting more than 5lbs
No Overhead Lifting
No Reaching Behind Back
How long are Sternal Precautions followed for after Cardiac Surgery?
6-10 weeks
What are Ancillary Sternal Precautions after Cardiac Surgery?
1.) Patient paces themselves
2.) Rest 1 hour after meals (or) before strenuous activity
3.) Avoid excessive heat or cold.
How long can it take for a sternum to heal, following CABG?
Up to 12 weeks (sometimes longer)
What is an educational focus of cardiac rehab for the patient?
Medications, Home activities, and follow-up appointments.
When does cardiac rehab begin following surgery?
As soon as possible.
CABG: 2-5d
PTCA-stent: 1-2d
What is the demand of a cardiac rehab patient navigating up 1 flight of stairs (met & bpm increase)?
5 Mets / Up 10-25 beats from resting
What is unstable angina (SBP / DBP)?
Uncontrolled hypertension at rest
SBP: >180
DBP: >110
An orthostatic BP drop of how much is considered unstable angina?
BP drop > 20 mmHg with symptoms.
