Q

what is atherosclerosis

A

potentially serious condition where arteries become blocked with fatty substances called plaques or atheroma.

  • the plaques cause the arteries to harden and narrow restricting blood flow and oxygen to vital organs
  • can cause blood clots which could stop blood to the heart or brain
  • no symptoms at first but could cause heart attacks or strokes
  • thickening or hardening of artery wall due to fatty deposits
