CARDIOVASCULAR Flashcards
(23 cards)
What type of organ is the heart?
A hollow conical fibromuscular organ
How many chambers does the heart have?
Four chambers:
* Right atrium
* Left atrium
* Right ventricle
* Left ventricle
What supplies blood to the heart?
Right and left coronary arteries which are branches from the ascending aorta
How does venous drainage occur in the heart?
Through a short venous channel called coronary sinus which opens in the right atrium
What are the three types of blood vessels in the cardiovascular system?
Arteries, veins, and capillaries
What do arteries do?
Carry blood away from the heart
What do veins do?
Carry blood toward the heart
What type of blood do arteries typically carry?
Oxygenated blood (except pulmonary artery)
What type of blood do veins typically carry?
Non-oxygenated blood (except for 4 pulmonary veins)
What is the structure of arteries?
Thick wall, elastic, and narrow lumen
What is the structure of veins?
Thin wall and usually wide lumen
What are end arteries?
Coronary artery
What are central arteries of the CNS?
Arteries of the brain
Which organs have arteries supplying them?
Spleen, kidneys, intestine, and lung
What is the function of the central retinal artery?
Supplies blood to the retina
What is the function of capillaries?
Exchange of gases, nutrients, and wastes
What are the characteristics of lymphatic vessels?
Larger than capillaries, drain intercellular fluids to systemic circulation
What interrupts lymphatic vessels along their course?
Lymph nodes for filtration of blood
Where are there no lymphatics present?
CNS, bone marrow, cornea, epidermis
Fill in the blank: The heart receives blood from the ______.
Superior and Inferior vena cavae
True or False: The left ventricle pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta.
True
Fill in the blank: The heart is drained through the ______.
Coronary sinus
What connects small arterioles with small venules?
Capillaries
