Cardiovascular Flashcards
(28 cards)
What is ischemia
decreased blood flow
What is atherosclerosis?
a disorder in which calcium and cholesterol build up and form plaque inside the walls of blood vessels, obstructing flow and interfering with their ability to dilate or contract
What is occlusion?
blockage
What is the lumen?
the insider diameter of the artery
What is thromboembolism?
a blood clot that is floating through blood vessels until it reaches an area too narrow for it to pass, causing it to stop and block the blood flow at that point
What is acute myocardial infarction (AMI)?
a classic heart attack
blockage in coronary artery
What is infarction?
death of tissue
What is cardiac arrest?
heart stops completely
What is acute coronary syndrome (ACS)?
a group of symptoms caused by myocardial ischemia
What is angina pectoris?
the pain felt when the heart tissues are not getting enough oxygen
result of a spasm of an artery
when heart is working hard - physical or emotional stress
What does angina pain feel like?
crushing, standing, squeezing on heart
How to treat angina?
rest, supplementary oxygen, niroglycerin
What is thrombolytic?
clot-busting
What is angioplasty?
mechanical clearing of the artery
Symptoms of AMI (acute myocardial infarction)
sudden weakness, naseau, sweating chest pain/discomfort pain in jaw, arms, back, abdomen, neck irregular heart beat syncope dyspnea pink, frothy sputum elevated bp rapid/labored respiration feeling of impending doom
What is syncope?
fainting
What is arrhythmia?
abnormality of heart rhythm
What is tachycardia?
rapid beating of heart
100+ beats/min
What is bradycardia?
slow beating of heart
60 beats/min or less
What is ventricular tachycardia?
rapid heart rhythm
150 - 200 beats/min
does not allow time for left ventricle to fill with blood
What is ventricular fibrillation?
disorganized, ineffective quivering of ventricles
no blood pumped thur body
TREATMENT: defibrillate heart
What is asystole?
absence of all heart electrical activity
involved with long period of ischemia
What is cardiogenic shock?
heart lacks enough power to force the proper volume of blood thru circulatory system
caused by heart attacks/AMIs
What is congestive heart failure (CHF)?
ventricular heart muscle is so damaged that it can no longer keep up with the return flow of blood from atria
heart rate increases
left ventricle enlarges in an effort to increase the amount of blood pumped each minute
heart becomes congested with fluid
