Cardiovascular system Flashcards
(18 cards)
what is the function transportation?
The CV transports blood to almost all of the body’s tissues.
what is the CV system’s overall function?
Cardiovascular system is responsible for transporting oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and cellular waste throughout the body via the blood.
what is the function protection?
Protects body through white blood cells. They clean up cellular debris and fight pathogens.
what is the function regulation?
Essential in maintaining homeostatic control.
function of the heart:
One and only function is continuously pumping blood around the body.
location of heart:
Found in the thoracic cavity. It is separated and protected from other organs in the pericardial cavity.
structure of heart:
Left and right side separated by septum. Four chambers, left and right side each have a ventricle and atrium.
Also includes aorta, superior vena cava, inferior vena cava, pulmonary artery, pulmonary veins.
function of valves:
Blood passes through before leaving the chamber and they prevent the backwards flow of blood and only allow blood to travel in one direction. It includes the tricuspid valve, pulmonary valve, mitral valve, and aortic valve.
right and left side:
right= deoxygenated (blue)
left= oxygenated (red)
BLOOD VESSELS (Arteries):
Blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood from heart to the body. Includes aorta, femoral artery, carotid artery, and subclavian artery.
BLOOD VESSELS (Veins):
Blood vessels that carry deoxygenated blood to the heart from the body.
BLOOD VESSELS (Capillaries):
Main function is to allow for movement of oxygen and carbon dioxide through gaseous exchange.
Function of blood:
Main function is to transport oxygen, nutrients, wastes and hormones around the body and plays an important role in maintaining and regulating body temp.
Red Blood Cells:
RBCs are ideal for gaseous exchange. Also carries carbon dioxide from cells to lungs so that they can be re-oxygenated.
White Blood Cells:
Crucial to body’s defence against disease. They form colonies that defend body against bacteria, viruses, parasites and foreign cells.
Platelets:
Cell fragments that perform vital function of blood clotting when blood vessels are ruptured or broken.
Plasma:
Liquid component of blood. Assists in maintaining normal blood pressure, clotting, immunity and exchange of materials.
