Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
(16 cards)
Main functions (skeletal):
To protect vital organs. Includes support, protection, mineral storage, movement, blood cell production.
Main function (muscular):
Movement, strength, heat production, shock absorption, shape, posture, and respiration.
Long bones:
bones that are longer than they are wide (femur)
Short bones:
bones that are roughly the same length and width (carpals)
Flat bones:
bones which are thin and wide that provide flat area for muscle attachment (pelvis)
Irregular bones:
bones which have no regular shape or characteristics (vertebrae)
Sesamoid bones:
irregular bones within a tendon (patella)
Ball and socket joint:
has a large range of movement (shoulder)
Hinge joint:
rotate to move back and forth (elbow)
Gliding joints:
side to side movement (wrist)
Vertebral joints:
slightly moveable and provides support (vertebral column)
Cardiac muscle:
Found in walls of heart. Contractions are involuntary, short rhythmical.
Skeletal muscle:
Attached to bones and skin. Contractions are voluntary and fast.
Smooth muscle:
Found in lining of digestive, urinary, reproductive systems, airways and arteries. Involuntary and slow contractions.
Function of musculoskeletal:
Main function is to protect and support the body.
Structure of musculoskeletal:
Made up of muscles, bones, tissues, tendons, cartilage, ligaments.
