cardiovascular system acute responses Flashcards
(9 cards)
the cardiovascular system
the heart uses the blood to transport oxygen around the body to the cells to produce ATP
EVERYTHING INCREASES
heart rate
the number of beats of the heart per minute
max HR=220-your age
stroke volume
the volume of blood pumped out of the left ventricle in one beat
SV=mL/beat
limited by the size of your heart (plateau)
cardiac output
the volume of blood pumped out of the left ventricle per beat per minute
Q= L/min
Q= SV x HR
blood pressure
the pressure of the blood against the walls when the heart contracts
the product of the cardiac changes rather than having its own impacts
avo2 difference
the difference between the amount of oxygen present in artery blood (blood arriving at the muscles) compared with the amount of oxygen in the venous blood (blood leaving the muscles).
the greater the difference, the more oxygen is being used by the muscle
redistribution of blood flow
the blood vessels contract or dialate (vasoconstriction /vasodilation) to send more blood to the working muscles and less to non-vital organs
DECREASED blood plasma
the amount of blood in the body (blood volume) this includes the water component of blood
excessive decrease in blood volume leads to increased blood viscosity. this decreases the ability of the heart to pump blood to the muscles.
reduces the muscles aerobic capacity and leads to a reliance on the anaerobic pathways -> FATIGUE!!
physiological response
allows more oxygenated blood to be pumped to the working muscles to support aerobic ATP production
