muscular system acute responses Flashcards
(9 cards)
the muscular system
includes muscle fibres, fuels and motor units, which cause the contractions that produce movement
EVERYTHING INCREASES
the all or nothing principle
all the muscle fibres within the unit will contract at the same time at the same maximum possible extent
the size principle
motor units will be recruited in order of size from smallest to largest, depending upon the intensity
motor unit recruitment
muscle fibres are recruited by the motor neuron in response to messages from the CNS.
the CNS uses motor neuroms to send the muscles messages (contract, relax)
allows for greater force production (the movement will hve greater power
link to decreased fuel stores
fuels are broken down to resynthesize ATP
muscular fuel stores deplete depending on the duration of exercise
increased ATP production
enzyme activity
enxymes allow chemical reactions involved in the production of energy and the removal of waste to occur at a faster rate.
as muscles produce more heated enzyme activity increases to produce energy via the three energy systems
blood flow to working muscles
redistriubution of blood flow during exercise, vasoconstriction at non-vital organs and vasodilation at the working muscles
more oxygen is being delivered to the working muscles
muscle temperature
increased blood flow to the muscles coupled with the heat generated with the production of ATP results in increases muscle temperature
increased production of ATP
av-o2 differnece
a muscular and a cardiovascular response
the amount of o2 in the arteries compared to o2 in the veins
has no real impact just shows the amount of oxygen that is being used by the muscles
