Cardiovascular Terminology Flashcards
(66 cards)
Arteries
Blood vessels that carry blood away from the heart.
arteri/o
Pathologic Condition:
Aneurysm
AN-u-rizm
Local widening of an artery, of a vein, or of the heart. From the Greek ‘aneurysma’ meaning “widening”.
Lab Tests or Diag. Procedures:
Angiography
an-je-OG-rah-fe
X-ray images of blood vessels after contrast is injected into the bloodstream (angi/o/graphy)
Ex: coronary angiography - to detect abnormalities in vessels that bring blood to heart.
cerebral angiography - shows blood vessels in brain.
Arterioles
Small arteries
arteriol/o
Aorta
Largest artery in the body. Blood sourced from left ventricle of the heart.
(aort/o)
Venules
Small veins.
venul/o
Veins
Blood vessels that carry blood to the heart from the body tissue.
(phleb/o, ven/o)
Pulmonary circulation
Passage of blood from the right ventricle of the heart to the lungs and back to the heart via the left atrium.
Tissue capillaries
Tiny blood vessels that lie near cells and through whose walls gases, food, and wastes can pass.
Systemic circulation
Passage of blood from the left ventricle of the heart to the body tissues and back to the right atrium of the heart.
Heart
Hollow muscular organ that pumps blood all over the body.
cardi/o, coron/o
Arteriosclerosis
ar-teer-e-o-skleh-RO-sis
Hardening of arteries
Arteri/o/sclerosis
Intravenous
Pertaining to within a vein (ven/o)
Lab Tests or Diag. Procedures:
Cardiac Catheterization
Introducing a catheter (a flexible, tubular instrument) into a vein or artery to measure pressure and flow patterns of blood.
Phlebotomy
fleh-BOT-o-me
Incision of a vein
Phleb/o/tomy
Lab Tests or Diag. Procedures:
Cardiac Enzyme Test
Measurement of substances in the blood that indicate a heart attack.
Cardiomyopathy
kar-de-o-mi-OP-ah-the
Disease of heart muscle
Cardi/o/my/o/pathy
Angioplasty
AN-je-o-plas-te
Surgical repair of a blood vessel
Angi/o/plasty
Arteriolitis
ar-teer-e-o-LI-tis
Inflammation of small arteries (arterioles)
Arteriol/itis
Pathologic Condition:
Congestive Heart Failure
Inability of the heart to pump its required amount of blood, resulting in inadequate oxygen to body cells.
Lab Tests or Diag. Procedures:
Echocardiography
eh-ko-kar-de-OG-rah-fe
Sound waves produce images of the heart
Venulitis
ven-u-LI-tis
Inflammation of a small vein
Venul/itis
Lab Tests or Diag. Procedures:
Electrocardiography
e-lek-tro-kar-de-OG-rah-fe
Recording electricity flowing through the heart.
electr/o/cardi/o/graphy
Aortic stenosis
Narrowing of the largest artery
