self theory
Define the actualizing tendency
Force of life, built in motivation, characteristic of a fully functioning person

A discriminator that evaluates experiences. A feedback mechanism. encourages experiences that fall in line with the actualizing tendency
What are two tools used by the OVP?
Positive regards and positive self regard
Define positive regard
valued experiences of affection, attention
Define positive self-regard
Valued experiences of self-regard
Define conditions of worth
Positive conditions that are out of step with organismic valuing
Define conditional positive regard
getting positive regard on “condition”: devalues organismic valuing, replaces actualizing tendency
Define the self
It is a subjective world, emerging from ones own experiences
Define the real self (I am)
the aspect of our experiential being that follows organismic valuing, dwelling in the actualizing tendency
Define the Ideal self (I should)
The self standard we can never meet, out of step with organismic valuing due to imposition of societal standards
Define incongruency
alienation of ones own experiences from the true self, leading to neurosis
Define anxiety
Incongruency of real self and ideal self brought forth in threatening situation
Two defenses against anxiety
Denial and perceptual distortion (like Freud’s rationalization)
