dad exhibited avoidant behaviour that she learned. anxiety induced by covid, being extra cautious about health and surroundings, and avoiding places she thinks might affect her health. sister got covid and health related anxiety increased. spending lots of time monitoring her health, so more likely to notice changes and interpret them in a distorted manner.
Is acceptance and commitment therapy a type of cognitive-behavioural therapy?
yes, ACT has the goal of not getting rid of anxiety but changing patterns of behaviour to mindfully observe thoughts and feelings and replacing habitual reactions with responses that are more useful. so accepting thoughts as just thoughts and not truths. mindfulness is an NB feature. looking at commitment to values.
What were the targeted tx mechanisms in ashleys tx? so which psych processes did the dr. try to change to help her?
tried to change how she thinks about her thoughts, and her reactions to them (behaviours). 1. contacting the present moment (instead of avoiding it) 2. behaving aligned with her values 3. engaging in committed action 4. experiencing her self-as-context (she is not the content of her thoughts but the consciousness experiencing those thoughts) 5. cognitive defusion (understanding the diff btwn thoughts and reality) 6. experiential acceptance (accepting experiences and thoughts that are beyond your control).

accepting thoughts as just thoughts and not truths. so accepting thoughts and feelings.
What did dr. husain do at the end of therapy to reduce the risk for relapse in anxiety?
complete a revised values clarification worksheet, identify where she was living most out of touch from her values, practice mindful awareness of the present moment, observe efforts to avoid or escape from her anxiety, keep reminders of what helped her in her phone, and remember certain key phrases that evoked strong memories of therapy.
