Case studies Flashcards

1
Q

What are Nicotonic ACh receptors and what are they targeted by?

A

Nictonic acetylcholine receptors used in nerve cells across a synapse. Insecticides can target them and prevent them from working by blocking the active site.

Q

How is coenzyme Q (coQ) used by mitrochondria and why is it a good target?

A

Important in the electron transport chain for mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. Mitochondrial function is to make ATP via this process. If impeded, cells have no energy to use and vital pathways cease to happen as activation barriers cannot be overcome.

Q

What properties of azoxystrobin needed to be developed and how?

A

Photochemical stability and volatility: addition of bulkier groups that can stabilise the alkene better.
Selectivity for fungi vs plant: addition of aromatic rings/modification of drug
Solubility: incorporation of electronegative atoms to form a heterocyclic aromatic ring instead of a benzene.
