Used to treat wasp stings and vincristine is used in chemotherapy for childhood leukaemia and has increased survival rates from 10% to 90% today
What issues are there with Rosy Periwinkle?
Synthesis of the alkaloids in the plant has not been possible so commercial cultivation is crucial. This is worth hundreds of millions of dollars to Eli Lilly every year but few profits are channelled back to Madagascar. This is an example of biopiracy. It deprives the nation of trade, economic growth and an ability to tackle poverty.
