Casey Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the background?
The marshmallow test, in which children were told they could have a second marshmallow if they resisted eating the first. Those who couldnt wait were low delayers, and those who could were high delayers.
What was the first aim?
Whether people who had difficulties delaying gratification at the age of four would still have difficulties delaying gratification 40 years later.
What was the sample?
27 low delayers, 32 high delayers
all from the original marshmallow test aged 44
What was the first procedure like?
Go/ No-Go task
Participants were shown a series of faces on a screen. They were told to press a button when they saw a particular expression.
-Fearful or happy face, in the hot condition
-Male or female task
What were the findings?
The original high delayers, were much better at resisting the go button than the low delayers.
What was the aim of procedure 2
Casey wanted to see if there is a brain based explanation for the ability to delay gratification
What was the sample for the second procedure?
11 low delayers, 15 high delayers
What was the second procedure like?
Participants had to repeat the Go/ no-go task while inside an fmri scanner
What were the findings for the second procedure?
When low delayers saw happy faces, they had less activation in their inferior frontal gyrus.
The low delayers had more activity in their ventral striatum
