Cast and splitters Flashcards
exam answers
A very bulky bandage used to immobilize a limb distal to the elbow or stifle joint.
Robert Jones bandage
Tefla pads are:
Primary layer non-adherent non-occlusive
Non-weight-bearing slings, like the Ehmer and the Velpeau, should not be maintained for more than
2 to 3 weeks
The toes of an animal with a distal limb bandage must be monitored for complications daily.
An increased distance between the toes of a paw is a sign of_____
Swelling
Identify the bandage below: ( wrapped around the shoulder)
Velpeau Sling
Identify the bandage below: ( hip area wrapped)
Ehmer Sling
Identify the bandage below:( thick thick bandage in the leg)
Robert Jones Bandage
What joint is immobilized using a Valpeau Sling?
Shoulder
What joint is immobilized using an Ehmer Sling?
Hip
What are the three basic layers of a bandage?
Primary layer, Secondary layer, Tertiary layer
What is the purpose of an adherent bandage such as a wet-to-dry?
To promote wound healing by debriding necrotic tissue
After having an interdigital foxtail removed, what type of bandage is typically used on a dog’s foot?
Modified Robert Jones bandage
If the bandage was placed too tightly, circulation will be compromised. What are at least 2 signs/symptoms we may see?
Swelling in the toes and change of color of toes to a blue or purple. odor too
After sufficient padding has been applied, the secondary layer is compressed with elastic gauze which is applied evenly from distal to proximal end of the limb with each pass overlapping about [______]%
50%
List a total of at least THREE reasons for bandaging:
To prevent a wound from becoming infected. To imobalize a fracture. To take care of a wound after a surgery
Tertiary – Protective Layer:
Name at least one material used as a tertiary layer.
Vetrap
Secondary – Padding Layer
Provides support and absorbs exudate.
List at least one material used as the secondary layer.
Cotton wrap
Walk me through as best you can step by step of how you placed a Modified Robert Jones Bandage during bandaging lab.
What materials you used, how you applied it, and how to finished the bandage. Think about what we did in lab.
I started off with tapering two strings of tape to the sides of the patient leg the I connected them with a popsicle stick after I wrapped cotton wrap neatly 50% around leg then I used another rap to tighten the first layers I places. My last layer is my vetrap I stretched it out before applying it on my patient so it won’t be tight and uncomfortable for them. My last step is to take my tieces of tape out my popsicle stick and twist it to place on my cast I made.
