CAT scans Flashcards
(7 cards)
how do CAT scans work
uses x rays to take multiple images (2D images called slices) of the body
the machine rotates around the patient, emitting x rays at different angles
x rays are absorbed by the brain tissue at different rates
how do the 2D slices become 3D in CAT scans
the detectors measure the x rays that pass through the body and it sends data to a computer
the computer reconstructs the cross sectional images (slices) and shows detailed views of the internal structures
they are detailed and can show soft tissue, bone and blood vessels in high contrast in 3D images
how much does 1 CAT scan cost
£450-£600
how long does 1 CAT scan take
15-30 mins
what is risky about these CAT scans
radiation exposure can increase health risks when used repetitively
are CAT scans invasive or non invasive
non invasive
what is a limitation of CAT scans
it has a controlled, artificial setting which may not reflect real life situations as the brains responses when in a scanner may not be the same as when in a natural setting which reduces ecological validity
