CB2 Flashcards
(13 cards)
what does the term turgid mean?
higher water concentration
what does the term plasmolysed mean?
lower water concentration
what happens if a cell is placed in higher water concentration?
the blood cell will burst
what happens if a cell is placed in lower water concentration?
the blood cell will shrivel
a full description of the process of active transport?
active transport is the movement of molecules against a concentration gradient from low to high concentration. this requires ATP
what does selectively permeable mean?
small soluble molecules pass through but larger insoluble molecules do not
diffusion meaning?
diffusion is the movement of molecules down a concentration gradient from high to low concentration
osmosis meaning?
osmosis is the movement of water molecules from a high water concentration to a lower water concentration through a selectively permeable membrane
what is the cell membrane made up of?
phospholipids and protein
why is diffusion important?
it allows them to gain the substances they require to obtain energy and grow. it also lets them get rid of waste products
what is passive transport?
a form of transport which requires no energy
what is the cell membrane described as?
a phospholipid bilayer
what are the 2 parts of a phospholipid bilayer?
phospholipids and proteins
