Q

Automatic Train Control

A

– A system whose operation will automatically result in the following:
• A full service application of the brakes which will continue either until the train is brought to a stop or its speed is reduced by the engineman to a predetermined rate
• Will apply the brakes when operating under a speed restriction, if the speed of the train exceeds the predetermined speed, until the speed is reduced to that speed

Q

Cab signal

A

– A signal located in engine control compartment indicating a condition affecting the movement of train or engine
– Used in conjunction with interlocking signals and in conjunction with or in place of block signals

Q

William Robinsons basic track circuit

A

Uses rails to detect the presence or absence of a train

Only binary data (limitation)

Q

Line circuits

A

Used for signals with multiple indications (3+?)

Needs a lot of poles and wires

Expensive

Inefficient

Q

How do coded track circuits work?

A

Coded impulses are transmitted by rails to code detectors, who translate it into signal aspect and gives new code to the next block

No code: Restricting

75: Approach
120: Approach medium
180: Clear

Q

Benefits of coded Track circuits

A

Now expensive wires needed

Improved:
Shunting sensitivity
Broken rail detection
Immunity to foreign currents

Longer block length possible

Aspects can be read by locomotive for continuous displayed signal inside

Q

Coded track circuits enable:

A

Approach locking for interlocking plants

Cab signaling, automatic train stop, automatic train control

Centralized traffic control

Not illuminating lights until train is approaching

Q

Problems related to trip stops

A

Need double block overlap to ensure safety

Hard to maintain in seasonal temperature changes
- no use for main lines

Q

Intermittent ATS

A
