cell cycle Flashcards
Interphase
cell grows, copies
its DNA and carries out normal
functions.
What are the main phases of the cell cycle?
Interphase:
Mitosis:
Cytokinesis:
Mitosis:
contents of the
nucleus are divided into two
equal parts.
Cytokinesis:
separation of two
nuclei and cell contents
into two daughter cells.
What phases are part of interphase?
G1 (gap 1)
S (for synthesis of DNA)
G2 (gap 2)
G1 (gap 1)
The growth period before the
replication of DNA occurs.
S (for synthesis of DNA)
The period after G1, where all
genetic material (chromosomes)
are synthesised or replicated.
G2 (gap 2)
The period after DNA synthesis
has occurred but before the start
of mitosis.
What proportion of the cell cycle is taken up by mitosis?
10%
what are the differences between cytokinesis in animal and plant cells?
Cytokinesis in animal cells occurs by the furrowing of the cytoplasm. In plant cells, cytokinesis is initiated with the formation of a cell plate in the middle of the cell.
How is the cell cycle regulated to deal with problems?
f the checkpoint mechanisms detect problems with the DNA, the cell cycle is halted, and the cell attempts to either complete DNA replication or repair the damaged DNA
Checkpoints:
g1-S, S-Mitosis, Metaphase
what are the steps required to produce a protein from DNA?
It consists of two major steps: transcription and translation.
