Cell Cycle • Chapter 2.2a Flashcards
(11 cards)
Define
Cell Division
Sequence of events within a cell’s lifetime — from one cell division to the next.
List
Two main phases of the cell cycle
- Meiotic Phase (M Phase)
- Interphase
(in order of occurence)
List
Subphases of the Meiotic (M) Phase
- Nuclear Division (Mitosis or Meiosis)
- Cytokinesis
(in order of occurence)
Define
Cytokinesis
Cytoplasmic division.
Define
Interphase
The stage of a cell’s life where it is not undergoing cell division.
(Majority of its lifetime)
List
Subphases of Interphase
- G1 (Gap 1)
- S (Syntheisis)
- G2 (Gap 2)
(in order of occurence)
Explain
What occurs during the G1 phase of interphase?
Cell growth
before DNA replication.
Explain
What occurs during the S phase of interphase?
DNA replication — single-chromatid chromosomes are duplicated and paired as sister chromatids (which are also structurally called chromosomes).
Explain
What occurs during the G2 phase of interphase?
The cell prepares for division.
Define
Mitosis
The asexual reproduction of a cell that produces two diploid (2n) cells.
Used in somatic cells in humans.
Define
Meiosis
The sexual reproduction of a cell that produces four haploid (n) cells.
Used in gametogenesis.
