Cell Development Flashcards
(13 cards)
Myeloproliferative
Rapid spread/increase of the bone marrow (myeloid) cells that give rise to red blood cells, granulocytes, monocytes and platelets
Lymphoproliferative
Rapid spread/increase of the lymphoid cells, occurs mostly in immunocompromised patients.
Acute disease
Rapid onset, short lived, severe, self limiting
Chronic disease
Insidious onset, long lasting, recurring
Chronic leukaemia
Mostly mature cells, few blast cells seen
Acute leukaemia
> 20% blast cells seen
Granulocytes
Basophils, eosinophils, neutrophils
Immature neutrophils
Myeloblasts, promyelocytes, myelocytes, metamyelocytes, band forms
Extramedullary erythropoeisis
Haemopoeisis is occurring outside the bone marrow, in the spleen or liver. Teardrop cells seen in peripheral blood.
Extramedullary erythropoesis
Haemopoeisis that occurs outside the bone marrow, in the liver or spleen. Teardrop cells seen in peripheral blood
Platelet functions
Haemostasis, coagulation, clot retraction, phagocytosis, storage and transport of histamine and serotonin
Thrombocytopenia
Platelets below the NRR. Bone marrow depression, hypersplenism, viral infections.
Thrombocytosis
Platelets above the NRR. Idiopathic: splenectomy, epinephrine administration
