Cell Division Meiosis Flashcards
(15 cards)
What are gametes
Sex cells
How many chromosomes does a human cell have
23 pairs
How many copies of each chromosome does a gamete have?
One copy of each chromosome
Name the two gametes
Sperm and egg
When the two gametes combine it creates what?
A fertilised egg
Why do gametes only have one copy of each chromosome?
Because the sperm gamete only carries the farther a DNA and the egg only carries the mothers so when they join together they have both parents DNA
How many chromosomes do human body cells have
46 chromosomes
How many chromosomes do gametes have
23 chromosomes
How to remember meiosis is sexual reproduction

mEieosis

Meiosis produces cells with how many chromosomes?
Half the normal number
Before the cell starts to divide it duplicates it’s DNA it looks like this
These are lined up in the middle... This "XX" is one chromosome pair... XX XX XX XX XX
In the second stage what happens
The chromosome pairs (XX) are pulled apart (X) (X) X X X X X X X X
In the second stage a nucleus forms around each line of chromosomes, what else forms
A cytoplasm (membrane) each new cell now has one copy of the chromosome
In the next part of division (second division) what happens to the chromosomes (a lot like mitosis)
The chromosomes line up in the middle of the cell and are pulled apart. This creates two more new cells so now there are 4
How many daughter cells does meiosis produce?
4! S
