Cell Divisision Flashcards
(10 cards)
What are diploid cells?
Cells that have two matching sets of chromosomes
How many chromosomes do human body cells contain?
46 chromosomes
What is the purpose of mitosis?
Provides new cells for the growth and repair of damaged cells
What are the stages of mitosis?
Prophase, Metaphase, Anaphase, Telophase
Each stage has specific events that lead to cell division
Where do chromosomes line up during mitosis?
At the equator of the cell
What role do spindle fibres play in mitosis?
Attach to each pair of chromatids, shortening to pull the chromatids apart
What does mitosis maintain in terms of chromosome number?
The diploid chromosome complement
What is produced by the cell division of the parent cell?
Two identical daughter cells
How can you calculate the number of cells produced by cell division?
By determining the time frame for division
How can cancer arise?
From uncontrolled cell division
