Cell Divison Flashcards

1
Q

What is the cell cycle? Why is it important?

A

The cell cycle are the events that a cell goes through in its lifetime, from one cell to another (parent ) to the next ( daughter). It includes interphase ( g1 synthesis g2) and mitosis ( p m a t c ).
The cell cycle is important because the human body needs cells to replicate in order for old nes to die and the body to developed and grow

Q

Prophase

A

First phase
Chromatic coils into chromosomes
Nucleoli and near membrane break down
Spindle fibres grow from centrioles
Centrioles migrate to poles

Q

Describe mitosis

A

Process of cell division
Pmatc
Is continuous and doesn’t occur in same order
Makes sure daughter cells relieves exact same info as parent cell

Metaphase

A

Chromosomes lie along midline
Some spindle fibres attach to centimetre

Q

Anaphase

A

Centimetres divide into two
Spindle fibres pull new chromosomes to opposite poles
Each pole now has an identical set of genes

Q

Telophase

A

Chromosomes gather at opposite poles
Chromatin uncoils
Nuclear membrane appears at each pole
New nucleus appears
Ionic spindle appears

Q

Cytokinesis

A

Division of cytoplasms
Furrow develops in cytoplasm between two nuclei
Furrow gradually deepens untill cuts cytoplasm

Q

Explain the function and Impotnce of the changes that occur to chromosomes during mitosis

A

Transfer cellular information that’s stored in chromosome’s
Chromatin coils into chromosomes
Chromosomes lie along midline
Spindle fibres pull them to opposite sides
Chromosomes gather at poles and chromatin uncoils
This stores large amounts of infomation

Q

How dose mitosis ensure that the daughter cell has exactly the same genetic information as the parent cell

A

Makes an exact copy of all genetic information stored in chromosome then splits into two
Synthesis in interphase
Cytoplasm makes mitotic spindles to move chromosomes to poles

Q

What are homolougous chromosomes

A

The chromosomes in diploid cells exist in pairs that are identical shape and carry genetic information that influence same characteristics

Q

What is a gamate

A

A gamete is a reproductive cell of an animal or plant. In females gametes are called ova or egg cells and make gametes called sperm

Q

Explain how genetic variation is created in meiosis

A

Genetic variation is formed in meiosis during the crossover of genetic information from one chromosome to another two chromatids
