Cell Form And Function Flashcards
(25 cards)
What is the purpose of the cytoskeleton?
Mediates movement and transport of the cell and things inside the cell, adhesion
What is the extra cellular matrix?
Fibrous network outside the cell used for structural support and signalling
Define tissue?
A collection of cells that work together to performs specific function
Two or more tissues make up and organ, true or false?
True
What are microtubules? What are two structures made from microtubules?
Hollow tube formed from Tubulin dimers
Cilia and flagella
What are the 3 main points of microtubules ?
Organized by the centre some / mtoc
Give compressive strength
Facilitate movement : railroad and propelling
What are micro filaments made of?
A double helix of actin monomers
What is the purpose of micro filaments?
Mediate cell adhesion, shape and mechanical movement
What are intermediate filaments composed of and what are their function?
Intermediate filament proteins, give shape to nucleus and help organize chromosomes and tensile strength in cytosol and adhesion of epidermis cells
What are the three main types of cellular movement ?
Movement of entire cell
Changes in cell shape
Movement of molecules/organelles within the cell
What is the purpose of Cadherins?
Links like cells together
What is the purpose of integrins?
Connect epidermal cells ton the basal lamina
Interconnect the dermis, fibroblast cells to the dermis ECM
What are the four purposes of cellular junctions?
Cell to cell connection
Cell to ECM connection
Make cells stick tightly together
Allow for communication between cytosol of adjacent cells
Are adheren junctions and desmosomes mediated by cadherin?
Yes
Are tight junctions impermeable?
Yes
Do gap junctions allow communication and exchange between adjacent cells?
Yes
Name four types of connective tissues rich in extra cellular matrix?
Dermis, ligaments, cartilage adipose and bone
What are the 3 main parts of extra cellular matrix?
Elastin fibres
Collagen fibres
Fibroblast nuclei
What is collagen?
Main protein found in skin, ligaments tendons and bone
Define basal lamina?
A specialized form of ECM found beneath all epithelial tissues
Ex epidermis, intestinal lining and blood vessel lining
What is the purpose of hemidesmosome junctions?
Attach epithelial cells to collagen in basal lamina
What is the purpose of basal lamina in relation to epthilium?
Provides supportive structure beneath the epithelium
When is cell migration important how is this mediated?
During embryo development
Wound healing
Mediate via the integrin
When do cancer cells become most dangerous?
When they acquire the ability to migrate through the ECM therefore they have metastasized
