cell organelles Flashcards
(16 cards)
Cell wall
Provides strength and structure.
Made from microfibrils of cellulose.
Cell membrane (plasma membrane)
Control the molecules/ions that can exit or enter the cell.
Vacuoles
Plant only.
Provide support by making the cells turgid.
Membrane surrounding it is called a tonoplast.
Nucleus
Contains the genetic information.
Controls the cells activities.
Nuclear envelope
Controls the entry and exit of molecules.
Nuclear pores
Allows large molecules to leave the nucleus.
Nucleoplasm
Jelly like material that makes up the bulk of the nucleus.
Nucleolus
Manufactures ribosomal RNA.
Mitochondria
Site of aerobic respiration.
The inner membrane is folded into cristae.
Chloroplasts
Site of photosynthesis.
Ribosomes
Site of protein synthesis.
Rough endoplasmic reticulum
Studded with ribosomes to provide a larger surface area for protein synthesis.
Provides a pathway for the transport of materials throughout the cell.
Smooth endoplasmic reticulum
Does not have ribosomes.
Synthesises and transports lipids and carbohydrates.
Golgi body
Made from sacs called cisternae.
Modifies and labels molecules.
Modified molecules are packaged in golgi vesicles and pinched off.
Lysosomes
Also contain lysozymes.
Breaks down waste materials of the cell.
Centrioles
Take part in cell division (they form the spindle fibres)
