Cell Reproduction Flashcards
(16 cards)
Interphase
The stages where a cell spends 90% of it’s time - just doing it’s job (G1, S, G2)
G1
Stage 1, where the cell grows and produces enzymes
S (synthesis)
Stage 2, where a copy of the chromosomes is synthesized
G2
Stage 3, where more growth occurs and DNA is checked for errors
M (mitosis)
Stage 4, where the nucleus is split and copies the DNA into two separate nuclei.
cytokinesis
Stage 5, where the cell is split into two new cells
histones
Small proteins found along the length of chromosomes that can move closer or farther apart
Chromosomes
Tightly coiled form of the DNA-protein complex
centromere
center of the chromosome
chromatid
copy of a chromosome
diploid
having two copies of each chromosome
homologous chromosomes
chromosomes that are similar
haploid
having one copy of each chromosome
Meiosis
cell division for the purpose of sexual reproduction
gametes
sperm/egg cells produced by meiosis
