Cell Structure And Cell Organelles Flashcards
(10 cards)
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls the activities of the cell and contains chromosomes. It also contains genetic info in the form of DNA. (deoxyribonucleic acid)
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Is a selectively permeable barrier which controls exchange between the cell and its environment
What is the function of a vacuole?
Is a storage organelle that stores water, nutrients, ions and waste nutrients
What is the function of the mitochondria?
Is the site of energy production in the form of ATP(adenosine triphosphate) through cellular respiration. It is also known as the powerhouse of the cell.
What is the function of a cytoplasm?
Is a jelly-like substance in which all cell organelle are suspended. It is also the site of many chemical reactions of life.
What is the function of a cell wall?
It prevents bursting of a plant cell and gives it a fixed shape
What is the function of the chloroplast?
Is responsible for photosynthesis and contains chlorophyll which is a green pigment in plants
What is the function of the starch grains and glycogen granules?
-They are both storage forms of carbohydrates found in living organisms
-They serve as energy reserves that can be mobilized as neeeded
-In animal cells glucose is stored as glycogen granules
-In plant cellls glucose/sucrose is stored as starch grains
What does a Plant Cell contain? (5)
-cytoplasm is surrounded by a cell membrane and a cell wall
-chloroplasts are present
-carbohydrates are stored as starch
-a large permanent vacuole is present in most plant cells and has s definite, fixed shaped
-cytoplasm is normally confined to a thin layer
What does an Animal Cell contain? (5)
-cytoplasm is surrounded by a cell membrane only
-chloroplasts are absent
-carbohydrates are stored as glycogen
-many small temporary vacuoles are present with no fixed shape
-cytoplasm is present throughout the cell
