Circulatory System (transport in animals) Flashcards
(17 cards)
Why is a transport system important?
Because it gets needed substances to every single cell and also transports waste or toxic substances away from every cell
What are the two factors that affect absorption and transport of substances in living organisms?
1.the surface area to volume ratio
2.the limitations of simple diffusion
What are 2 things transport systems can carry?
1.useful subtances
2.wasteful substances
Examples of useful subtsances are? (7)
1.oxygen
2.water
3.digested food
4.vitamins
5.minerals
6.hormones
7.antibodies
Examples of wasteful substances are? (2)
- carbon dioxide
- nitrogenous waste
Where is carbon dioxide transported from an to?
It is transported from body cells where its produced in respiration and transported to lungs to be excreted
Where is nitrogeneous gas transported from and to?
It is transported from cells where produced and transported to kidneys to be excreted
Define Circulatory System
The circulatory system is also known as the cardiovascular system or the blood transport system. It circulates blood through the body and helps maintain homeostasis
What is Homeostasis?
The state your body is in when its internal conditions are stable
What is the function of Red blood cells? (erythrocytes)
They transport oxygen combined with haemogoblin, from the lungs to tissues where the oxygen is given up readily
What is the function of White blood cells? (leucocytes)
Produces antibodies that kill pathogens by causing them to clump toether, or neutralise ther toxins
What is the function of Platelets? (thrombocytes)
helps blood to clot to prevent loss
What is the function of Plasma?
Blood cells are suspended
What are the three types of blood vessels?
- arteries
- capillaries
- veins
What is the function of arteries?
arteries carry blood away from the heart
What is the function of capillaries?
capillaries are tiny vessels that pass close to all body cells
What is the function of veins?
Veins carry blood back to the heart
