cell structure functions (only) Flashcards
(18 cards)
Cell membrane
Separates and protects cell from it’s surroundings. Regulates what goes into and out of the cell (selectively permeable)
Cell wall
surrounds cell membrane. Provides support to cell and is strong and rigid
Cytoplasm
Jelly-like substance. Carries out chemical reactions and supports organelles
Nucleus
controls cells activities. Contains DNA. Surrounded by nuclear envelope/membrane
Nucleoulus
produces ribosomes
Nucleoplasm
Jelly like substance that contains DNA and chromatin
Rough ER
Processes and transports proteins. Studded with ribosomes which carry out protein syntheesis
Smooth ER
detoxifies harmful substances, and regulates calcium levels in cells.
Ribosomes
Builds proteins
Golgi body/apparatus
Modifies, stores, and transports proteins from the rough ER and substances like fats from the SER
vacuoles
Stores harmful substances. Animal cells have lots of small vacuoles while plant cells have one large one. Keeps plants firm by pressing against cell wall
vesicles
for transport of substances
Lysosomes
break down waste, damaged cell parts, and unwanted materials using digestive enzymes.
Mitochondria
site of cellular resporation. Breaks down glucose to produce energy.
Chloroplasts
Site of photosynthesis. Use solar energy and CO2 to produce glucose.
cytoskeleton
Network of fibers which provide support and structure and allow for movement in the cell.
centrioles
small cylindrical structures found in animal cells. Help organize cell division.
