Cell Structures Flashcards
(24 cards)
Contractile vacuole
Control water pressure within the cell
Nucleus
The “control center of the cell” holds the cell’s main DNA
Cell wall
A rigid structure on the outside of certain cells. Usually plant and bacteria cells
Plasma Membrane
The semipermeable membrane between the cell contents and either cell wall or the cell’s surroundings
Food Vacuole
Holds food while it’s being digested
Phagocytic vacuole
Vacuole that engulfs large food substances
Central vacuole
A large vacuole that rests at the center of most plant cels and is filled with a high concentration of solutes
Chromoplasts
Organelles that contains pigments used in photosynthesis
Rough Endoplasmic reticulum
ER that is dotted with ribosomes
Centrioles
Organelles mostly found in animal cells; composed of micotubules
2 different functions:
Form flagella or cilia
Involved in asexual reproduction called mitosis
Golgi bodies
Where proteins and lipids are stored and then modified to suit the needs of the cell
Leucoplasts
Organelles that store starches or oils
Nucleolus
The center where RNA is made. Ribosomes are also assembled there and transported out of the nucleus
Chromatin
Clusters of DNA, RNA, and proteins in the nucleus of a cell
Cytoskeleton
A network o fibers that holds the cell together, helps the cell keep its shape, and aids in movement
Middle Lamella
The thin film between the cel walls of the adjacent plant cells
Secretion vesicle
Vesicle that holds secretion products so that they can be transported to the plasma membrane and released
Pinocytic vesicle
Vesicle formed at the plasma membrane to allow the absorption of large molecules
Waste vacuole
Vacuoles that contain the waste products of digestion
Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum
ER that has no ribosomes
Lysosome
Te organelle in animal cells responsible for hydrolysis reactions that break down proteins, polysaccharides, disaccharides , and some lipids
Cytoplasm
A jellylike fluid inside the cell in which the organelles are suspended
Mitochondria
The organelles in which nutrients are converted to energy
Ribosomes
Non-membrane-bounded organelles responsible for protein synthesis
