Cells Flashcards
Cells and the functions of them (prokaryotic , eukaryotic and stem cells) (17 cards)
What does the mitochondria do
Provides energy
Cytoplasm?
Holds the components of the cell and protects them from damage
Nucleus?
Control centre of the cell, holds DNA
Cell membrane?
Lets nutrients pass through, is semi permeable
Cell wall?
Protects the cell
Vacuole
A big sack made to hold stuff such as waste or food
Chloroplast?
Help with photosynthesis
Ribosomes?
Protein synthesis takes place here
What is the difference between a plant and animal cell
Plant cells have more components. They have stuff to aid with photosynthesis such as chloroplasts and a vacuole
What are stem cells?
They are special cells produced by bone marrow (a spongy tissue found in the centre of some bones) that can turn into different types of blood cells
What do stem cells replace?
Specialised cells which have been damaged or lost
What is stem cell therapy
The use of stem cells to treat or prevent a disease of condition, usually takes the form of a bone marrow transplantation
What is a cell cycle
A cell cycle is a series of events that take place as a cell grows and divides
What are the four stages of the cell cycle
copies its DNA andd also grows, mitosis takes place, cell membrane and cytoplasm divide to form two identical cells
What is cell division/what occurs?
A parent cell divides into two or more daughter cells
What is one type of cell division
Mitosis
What is one function of mitosis
Essential for growth and development of multicellular organisms
