Cells Flashcards
(33 cards)
What are prokaryotes?
Single celled organisms with no nucleus.
What is the cell theory?
Cells are the basic unit of life, Every new cell forms from another cell, and every living thing is composed of cells.
What are eukaryotes?
Cells with a nucleus and other structures formed around the membrane.
Main function of the cytoplasm?
Where the organelles are placed
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Supports cell, controls what goes in and out
What is the main function of the nucleus?
Holds DNA and controls functions of the organelles.
Main function of the Mitochondria?
Supplying cell with energy.
Main function of endoplasmic reticulum
Transports materials throughout the cell.
Main function of the golgi apparatus
Getting rid of waste
Why do cells need to reproduce and not stay one big cell?
There is a time period in which cellular respiration etc occurs, and if it does not happen between that time period the cell will become poisoned. The cell has to be a particular size for this to happen.
2 Organelles found only in the plant?
Cell wall, chloroplasts.
3 Reasons cells divide?
Grow, repair and reproduce.
what is diffusion? Explain
Chemicals going in the cell from an area of high concentration to low concentration.
What is osmosis?
When liquid, usually water enters the cell from an area of low concentration into the higher concentration.
3 stages for cell division?
interphase, mitosis, cytokenisis
4 phases of mitosis in order?
Prophase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase
What happens in the prophase stage?
Chromosomes can be seen, consists of 2 soster chromatids.
What happens in the metaphase stage?
The chromosomes meet in the middle of the cell, the membrane seems to have completley gone.
What happens in the anaphase stage?
Centrometre splits and the now daughter chromosomes move to opposite sides of the cell.
Telophase stage?
nucleur membrane seems to form around each group of daughter chromosomes.
What happens in the cytokenisis phase?
Cell pinches in the middle and seperates into 2 different cells, DNA is exactly the same in both.
What controls movement of chromosomes during mitosis?
Spindle fibers.
what is a tumour?
mass of cells that divide uncontrollably.
What is a benign tumour?
Mass of cells that do not break off and affect its surroundings.
