Cells and Homeostasis Flashcards
(22 cards)
Describe the function of a nucleus in a cell.
Contain genetic material. Largest organelle
Describe the function of a membrane in a cell.
Controls the passage of substances in and out of the cell regulating intracellular environment
Describe the function of a ribosome in a cell.
Synthesis protein from amino acids using RNA template
Describe the function of mitochondria in a cell.
Aerobic respiration with O2 & ATP - batteries of the body (these make all our energy)
Describe the function of the endoplasmic reticulum in a cell.
Smooth synthesis lipids and steroids hormones
Rough studded with ribosomes synthesis protein and leave by exocytosis
Describe the function of the Golgi apparatus in a cell.
Synthesised proteins are packaged and stored here
Describe the function of the Lysosome in a cell.
Small membranous vesicles containing enzymes
What are the 3 ways substances are moved through membranes?
Osmosis - movement of water down the concentration gradient
Diffusion- movement of molecules from an area of high concentration to an area of lower concentration
Active transport - transport if substances up the concentration gradient requiring energy and carriers
What are the cell actions?
Reproduce
Nourishment (creat and maintain)
Movement (energy and transport)
Excretion (get rid of waste)
Growth
Respiration
What’s the role of red blood cells?
Carry oxygen
What’s the role of kidney tubule cells?
Control ware and salt excretion
What’s the role of cardiac cells?
Contract and control heart pumping
What’s the role of cartilage?
Structural support
What’s the role of neurone cells?
Conduct electrical impulses (messages)
What’s the role of the sperm cell?
Convey genetic material for reproduction
What are tissues?
Groups, of similar cells
What are the 4 basic tissue types?
Connective tissue
Epithelial tissue
Muscle tissue
Nervous tissue
What is the role of the connective tissue?
Most abundant type of cells. Binding, supporting, protecting (e.g. cartilage, blood etc)
What is the role of the epithelial tissue?
Cells forming continuous sheets often lining body cavities ( e.g. skin, gut lining, glands)
What’s the role of nervous tissue?
Neurones (nerve cells) which conduct electrical impulses through the body (e.g. Brian, pineal cord) to control the body’s functions/movement/secretions/senses
What do tissues form into?
Organs
What are organs?
It’s the grouping of 2 or more tissue types into recognizable structure with a specific function
