11
Q

Why don’t animal cells have a permanent vacuole?

A

Because they don’t need the extra support, and store glucose elsewhere

16
Q

Name 4 factors affecting diffusion

A

Temperature
Surface area
Diffusion distance
Concentration gradient

17
Q

How does temperature affect diffusion?

A

More thermal energy is converted to kinetic energy at a higher temperature

18
Q

How does surface area affect diffusion?

A

By providing more area for molecules to move across the cell membrane

19
Q

How does diffusion distance affect diffusion?

A

The shorter the distance that particles have to travel is, the quicker they get there

20
Q

How does concentration gradient affect diffusion?

A

The more difference there is in concentration, the faster the rate of diffusion is

21
Q

Name 3 adaptations of the alveoli

A

1 cell thick
Large surface area
Moist walls

22
Q

Define osmosis

A

The MOVEMENT of WATER from a DILUTE solution to a CONCENTRATED solution through a PARTIALLY PERMEABLE MEMBRANE

23
Q

In the osmosis required practical (potato), how do you measure the percentage change in mass?

A

(Change in mass ÷ starting mass) x 100

24
Q

How do you find the concentration of the potato cells in the osmosis RP?

A

Find where the y axis hits 0, and read across

25
Define active transport
The MOVEMENT of PARTICLES from a LOW concentration TO a HIGH concentration, AGAINST the concentration gradient. It requires ENERGY from RESPIRATION.
26
Why can't a flooded plant absorb ions in the soil?
As active transport is the movement of particles against the concentration gradient, it requires energy from respiration. This needs oxygen which the plant can't get in water logged soil.
